27 Feb 2010 But I Brought A Note!
 |  Category: Family, Home-front  | 2 Comments
I know that I haven’t posted much this past week. I really am sorry. I even have a really really good excuse this time! Yes, really! The truth is, my hubby got sick with a mild case of pneumonia. Mild pneumonia plus severe asthma equals one very sick hubby in need of brief hospitalization and one house full of worried children AND one very worried and exhausted wife and mother who can hardly remember where she is much less what she is supposed to be doing! So, in the end, I took care of my family and I didn’t blog.
18 Feb 2010 Weird Happenings

For some reason, our family seems to have more than it’s share of weird accidents. It’s not that the occurrences around here border on the paranormal or anything, just that we seem to have the oddest sorts of accidents.

So, why do I bring this up now? Well, it seems that one of our shower heads suddenly decided to pop out of the wall and shoot across the room. Because, you know, that is just the way things happen around here. Guess what my dear hubby will be fixing this evening?
16 Feb 2010 The Daily Lunch Debate
Can nothing exist anywhere? If you found it, how would you know?

If alien Peanut Butter and Jelly Monkeys are threatening to take over the world, should we fight back or wait and see if they do a better job than those currently in charge? How do you fight alien Peanut Butter and Jelly Monkeys anyway? What do Peanut Butter and Jelly Monkey aliens eat?

Eaglewood is working today, so the children and I are making pizza and chocolate-covered peanut butter balls in anticipation of his homecoming. Later tonight, we intend to gather around and watch a movie or two together. Life is good!

11 Feb 2010 It’s SNOWING @ Our House!
This is the THIRD snow that our part of Texas has had so far this winter! I will admit that there was a brief moment when I was almost sad that homeschoolers do not get snow days, but then I remembered that we would just be snuggling down and doing a lot of reading together, gathering in the kitchen to do some baking and maybe a science experiment or two, and perhaps tracking snow fall levels (which kind of sounds like math). That sounds a whole lot like a regular school day here… Maybe we will just wait until Spring and take a “beautiful day” off from school while the public school kids are stuck indoors. ;)

10 Feb 2010 Another Ugly Truth About Homescooling
 |  Category: Education, Family, Homeschooling  | One Comment
One of those ugly little truths that homeschoolers seldom share with their public schooling counterparts is that homeschooling isn’t always fun and it doesn’t always seem terribly rewarding. Yes, indeed, it is often hard work and the children sometimes complain. The teachers and students alike are every bit as human and fallible as their counterparts, and good habits and stubbornness sometimes do more to keep a family-based school moving forward toward its goals than any particular enjoyment of the lessons being learned. In other words, homeschooling mirrors real life. While it is rewarding, it is also hard work and requires a high level of commitment and perseverance.

The truth is that we here in the Nest have been sort of sleepwalking through our homeschooling days for much of the past couple of months. We have been in the midst of a hard season in our lives and school, but seem to be finally reawakening to the fun and the joy that had been missing of late. It is not an instant process this reawakening, but it is, at least, quite a pleasant change. After a dreary season of blandness and sameness, it is wonderful to finally reawaken to the sunshine and fun.

Would you like to know what we are doing differently to bring back that sense of fun? Very little. We have been relying on our daily habits and stubborn adherence to and belief in the importance of our tasks to carry us through one of our drearier seasons. I hope that Charlotte Mason would be proud of us! Just like with the rest of life, a quick sprint might be fun, but it is a slow and steady perseverance (Eek! There’s that word AGAIN!) that wins the race. May we continue to hold fast and press on to our mark.
04 Feb 2010 It’s Funny…

Yesterday, I took a music video walk down memory lane with my teenagers. We had a wonderful time watching old videos and laughing at styles gone by, be they clothing, hair or music. It is funny that we human beings place so much value on things that do not last and so often neglect the most important things in life, isn’t it? I wonder if G-d laughs, too? Maybe He cries…
